Last season, the Cardinals developed a massive offensive hole in their lineup. Shortstop Cesar Izturis did a nice job in the field, but he contributed just 10 doubles, three triples, one homer and 24 RBIs in 414 at-bats.

With their first practices under their belts and new coaches at the helm, the Homer High boys and girls basketball teams are just about ready to embark on a new season. The year may be low on expectations, said both coaches, but is filled with promise.

The Plainfield Public Library's Winslow Homer original painting "Winding Line" failed to land a bid Wednesday matching its reserve price of $2 million at a Sotheby's auction in New York City, and the auction house will now seek a private buyer for the 1875 oil on canvas, library officials said.

Peer out the window of Jim Cahill's living room in Homer Glen, and you'll see trees, a lake ... and Dumpsters. They sit a few hundred yards away, behind the B.I. Equipment Rental store at 159th Street and Parker Road. The garbage bins are left open most of the time, and Cahill worries that they're a health hazard.
